netbsd/alpha 1.5W kernel, sup as of 6/27

i finally was able to succeed in 'make build' to DESTDIR. after that
was done, i 

  cd DESTDIR
  pax -rw -pe . /

the copy process was fine. then i tried some commands and almost every
thing coredumped. from 'ls' to 'more' etc.

so i rebooted. while the dmesg scrolled, it hit something after isp0
announcements and the screen started scrolling so fast it's hard to see
what it's saying.. but i can make out that there was "memory management
fault" scrolling up the screen.

any ideas what happened? i booted from flops and tar -xzvf
oldsnapfiles.tgz back into / and things are ok again. is this a bad
time to get up to -current?
