Just booted a more recent kernel:

On the console starting X, I see

pms_protocol: standard PS/2 protocol (no scroll wheel)
pms_enable: using no scroll wheel (3 buttons) protocol

This time keyboard and mouse locked from the start of the X session.
Killing the session remotely, I see

pckbc: command timeout
pms_disable: command error

on the console.
