I actually have

CFLAS+= -pipe
CXXFLAS+= -pipe
HOST_CFLAS+= -pipe
HOST_CXXFLAS+= -pipe

in /etc/mk.conf on my some machines and at least kernel build (make
depend && make or make MKPROFILE=yes depend && make MKPROFILE=yes) or
csh -c 'time ./build.sh' works without any problems for more than few
months.
