Unfortunably there's no way to build the toolchain with a minimal source tree,
you need a full source tree as the toolchain build pulls in sources
from various places.
However, if you're building a current kernel from already-installed
current binaries which are not too old (1.6 should work as well), then
you should be able to build the kernel with the already-installed tools.
