As it stands, PAM seems to have a well-defined API on Solaris, but Sun
hasn't done much with it, except providing minimal libraries.
On Linux, God knows...
HPUX and Tru64 probably follow the Sun API. I don't know what AIX, SCO
OpenServer, and Unixware are providing.
