There are a lot of things which we would like to be able to do (and
which other open source OS's can already do), having to do with
authenticating users based on third-party database or network
information systems, which can't be done without some form of pluggable
authentication API.
That's the goal here. The question of `ok, then which API?' is still in
play. :-)
