MINOR nit:  "overloading" is a bit harsh; it's not ever been considered
overload until now.  It's been considered necessary, practical and
a very fortunate accident, if it was indeed accidental.

Sun did this very early on with an -i flag; was this ever considered?

This is good news, actually.  This means that there lies the possibility
of installing other third-party dynamically loading things that we haven't
thought of (or which haven't (yet) been invented).
