Okay, last night I had tried the -d flag, but I didn't 
get that I also needed -i.  -d, by itself, made no 
difference that I could see.  

With -di I now have the kdump from the time of the 
modem hangup to the display of the "Couldn't delete 
default route" message.  The dump is 599 lines, so I 
am not posting it.  Despite David's intervening post 
suggesting the dump is not enlightening, I have sent 
the dump to Christos just because he asked for it.  
If anyone else wants the dump, :-) , just let me 
know.
