I have a little bit more information to add to this.

First, I got a suggestion to check the collision count of the
interface. As I suspected, the collision counter remained at 0.
However, it seems that Ierrs is increasing steadily when
trying to receive stuff at 100Mbits/s.

 - Receiving 10240000 bytes via ftp to a MFS file system,
   Ierrs remained 0.
 - After receiving the same file to a file system on a hard drive,
   Ierrs jumped to 767.

I'm becoming more and more convinced that neither the hard drive
nor the NIC (nor OS) is to blame, but either PCI or IDE sucks.
My MB is MSI KT4V, and I'm currently planning to try an IDE
card in it to see if viaide is to blame.
