For me the error you mention only happens if I feed a corrupt
jpg. Then I get:
xpad% qiv ~/myStuff/Photo/20050201-18:13:12/r0012142.jpg =
Corrupt JPEG data: premature end of data segment
Unsupported marker type 0xf4
gdk_imlib ERROR: Cannot load image: /home/marko/myStuff/Photo/20050201-=
18:13:12/r0012142.jpg
All fallbacks failed.
