OK - the cross build of X worked now.  I suspect the bit of "rm -rf"
loving applied in /usr/obj cleared out some gunk that was breaking the
build.  The machine is still grinding it's way through the multitude
of kernel builds done in a release build but it has, at least,
succeeded in building X which it did not before.
