Unfortunately, that didn't pan out. I was able to drop down to the 
prompt and issue those commands, but.. no dice. :-)

Instead, what happened was my USB keyboard stopped being recognised and 
issuing the commands:

ifconfig rtk0 media 100baseTX ; ifconfig rtk0 mediaopt full-duplex

... kill the network connection. Then, since my keyboard is insensate 
the only option is to click the reset switch. Doh.

I'll rebuild a kernel or two and see if I can't find an option or config 
combination that works.

For the record, this machine is:

total memory = 2046 MB
cpu0: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+, 2009.37 MHz
Motherboard: ASUS M2N-E (AM2-based)

Two SATA drives.

The cool part about netbsd-3 was that I could get the network card 
working at full speed. The crappy part was that the MCP55 nVidia SATA2 
chipset wasn't supported in full-speed DMA mode.

Upgrading to 4.99.17 solved the DMA issue (a cool 63MB/sec raw now) but 
now I don't have any network connectivity.
