surely that was wrong in the first place anyway?  HUGE_VAL is a valid
number and the invalid input is signalled when

    (errno == ERANGE && (r == HUGE_VAL || r == -HUGE_VAL || r == 0))

but you could just test for ERANGE, after all thats what the function was
doing in the first place..?
