Do you mean "tip just hangs and does not talk to the modem" or "the
modem disconnects imediately"?

The new code added support for modem status signals (like carrier), which
the old (u3g) code just ignored - so this might expose old bugs now.
I can't look at details right now, can you please file a PR?
