Recent i386-GENERIC panic

GENERIC kernel built from sources around 201109080300Z panics on boot
as follows:

and dropped into the debugger.  The machine observed has no serial ports,
so I couldn't get a backtrace without doing hand-transcription.  I wrote
the panic message down and the partial dmesg was still resident after
rebooting with the old kernel (built from sources around 201108250200Z
and works OK with updated modules).

I'll try again with another machine which has a serial port, so I can
see if it's a machine-specific thing and if not, get a transcript.
It'll be a day or so until I can try...
