In fact, post using boot.iso, i've entirely depended on Atheros 
(ath0) for downloading all the sets, sources, pkgsrc and pkgsrc-wip.

There was no freeze up or crashes, especially given the fact that 
the system was at 98% cpu utilization, very low on memory and 
packages were downloading over ath0 link.

While i have not been able to pinpoint what could be the issue in 
your case, it is nice to compare notes when  using similar hardware.
