I rebuilt current amd64 and built current i386 from source, hosting from
current amd64 USB-stick installation.

Both installed, but now neither is bootable, init dies.

Build dates were December 26 to 28, 2013 on same src update.

I haven't tried to rebuild since then, busy with FreeBSD where interesting
things are happening with 10.0-RELEASE and 11-HEAD, and much more promising on
my hardware than NetBSD.

I can run "cvs up -dP -A" from USB-stick installation of NetBSD 5.2-STABLE or
6.1-STABLE amd64 or i386.

Question is what to use as host for rebuilding, I guess I could use 6.1-STABLE
amd64 USB-stick installation.

If I try again, maybe I should wait until your problem is resolved.

Tom
