you can work around the space issue with null mounts
mkdir /usr/src
mount -t null /local/netbsd-src/src /usr/src
my compile directory has a lib/compat, it is generated during 'make
depend', not config.
I'd often 'fix' issues by deleting the entire directory and starting
over.
