in the meantime, I notice in the dhcpcd(8) manpage:

   More scripts are supplied in @DATADIR@/dhcpcd/hooks and need to be copied
   to /libexec/dhcpcd-hooks if you intend to use them. 

shouldn't @DATADIR@ be converted to eg /usr/share/examples during the 
import or build for the built in version?
