There are no ghosts. If wedges come back after a reboot, then there is
a label (GPT or MacOS partition table in GENERIC) that describes them.
dkctl delwedge may remove a wedge, but doesn't change such a label.

That helps when device nodes are missing in /dev. You can achieve a
similar effect with devpubd.

That said, creating a RAID on large disks is simple. Booting from such
a thing or using it for crash dumps however involves magic. The bootloaders
at least got some support recently.
