Why doesn't amdsmn(4)'s attach routine get called

I keep getting lostin kern/subr_autoconf.c's frob*() routines, so
cannot figure out why, when the amdsmn module is loaded, it seems
never to call the amdsmn_attach() routine from config_init_component

I looked at the module's generated ioconf.c and it seems to point
to amdsmn_attach() correctly (in the cfattach stuff) but doesn't
get called.

Any clues?
