Well, in regards to unexpected paging during file I/O, I've now just
set freetarg to a flat 0.5%, and while I still see paging during a
stress test, it does seem much better. Stress test is a simple:

find /usr/pkgsrc/distfiles -name '*gz' | xargs -n 2 -P 24 gzip -vt

this is from a raidframe mirror over a pair of nvme - which sustains
about 2GB/s.
