i think `vipw' and `man 8 passwd' are the commands you are looking for
(not sure about the 8)

X11? `real men' don't use X :)

My IIsi has a similar experience to locking up after about 5-10 commands;
however I get to see the "MMU panic" message and vital statistics on the 
console.  Since you change the size of your memory and the hanging symptoms
differ I would hazard that it is something to do with the way the MMU is
set up to handle the non-contiguous memory (could be a boundary condition 
problem?)
