You need to get binaries that agree with the kernel; try picking them up
from someone running a reasonably -current set.

As for performance; the first suggestion I'd make is more RAM. I'm actually
impressed that MacBSD is happy with 5 megs! Upgrading to 8mb should reduce
your swap activity quite a bit.
