I had the same vipw and dt problems on my 8 meg SE/30.  Fixed it by upgrading
to the MRG ("Mac ROM Glue") kernel on ftp.eskimo.com/wormey/NetBSD.  That
one is much more stable (though I still get the occasional panic).
