I'm happy to say that X-Windows is up and running on my SE/30, but I'm
having the strangest problems with xinitrc. Any time I try to put an
xinitrc file in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/, the X Windows package refuses to
start. It gets halfway through, paints the screen (via xsetroot -gray),
then gives up with the message:
waiting for X server to shut down
Fatal server error:
no screens found
or sometimes just:
waiting for X server to shut down
Note that this happens with *any* xinitrc file -- it doesn't matter what
that file contains. It also happens if I have a local .xinitrc in my home
directory. DISPLAY is defined as ":0.0", so that should be okay. Now, if
I take out all xinitrc and .xinitrc files, X will start up and I get
presented with one window. I can then go and manually start up all my X
clients, except one: xconsole always comes back with the message "Couldn't
open console". Why?
Sorry if this is a basic X configuration issue. Thanks for any help.
-David.
