So, if one downloads a kernel from the ftp sites and wants to test it,
all one has to do is make sure the preferences are set correctly in the
booter (right?).

If that kernel is in the MacOS partition (just to see if I can boot off
it) and I watch everything fly by (i.e. Oreos and Miracle Whip, etc...),
what will be the tell-tale sign that it works? After all, I get one
gray bar and a total freeze. I've been working on the assumption that
such behaviour is _bad_.

So what IS supposed to happen if all you have is the kernel and you
boot the thing (by itself essentially)?
