I forgot BSD does that.  I created the cd0* devices, but the disk won't
mount.  I'll fetch a CD that is known to mount on my Suns, and try that.

The next question for CD-ROM drive owners is, is there a way to eject
a cd?  Perhaps a set of SCSI tools for NetBSD?  I'll look around the
various archives for something.

I received about 7 very helpful responses to my original post yesterday.
Thanks to all who sent me a reply - I'm getting things under control and
will wait for sup.netbsd.org to return.
