Can you show us your sfm14400 entry in your /etc/gettytab?  I didn't
have any trouble logging in from a notebook PC which was connected to
my SE/30 via a null modem cable using std.38400 or std.19200 on
/dev/tty01 in /dev/ttys.  Since you have "local" above, I assume you
are trying something similar.
