This is a followup to my earlier post. 
I tried using an earlier kernal (In particular the 
july 18th kernal from NetBSD.org's current directorys..)
and found that 
cu -l /dev/tty00 -s 19200 
worked with that kernal. In fact  I was even able to slattach
etc...
 BTW thanks to everyone who responded to my earlier plea. 
(Hopefully someone can fix the most recent (august? ) kernal?)
 
OH, one last thing: How do you hang up the modem after you 
are done? I found that killing cu does not do the trick.
