Can't use Linux -- it means I'd have to give away the OS with the
box. Given that it has to run (possibly) on ARM, I'd use NetBSD and
deal with the deficiencies.

I've had to think about this For Real as of a few months ago when I
was working with some people on a business plan for an embedded box,
and it was the only reasonable answer then. Probably still is.

Believe it or not, a lot of others have come to the same
conclusion. FreeBSD seems to "own" the "firewall in a crate" market,
but we seem to have the most embedded software deployments. Linux
seems only to be in use in appliances like the Cobalt Raq where the
fact that the software has to be opened up doesn't matter.
