Well, I really should not have said pipes alone, because I was thinking
of pipes, shell scripts, etc. For example attach a filter via a pipe
to the active of listing a directory, or have scripts available
for use.

Apple has done something like this for years with Applescript.
You could give programmers a simple interface to the desktop in
UNIX as well, and do a lot of the same things.
