Well, BSDI is twice that now. :-)
You could get SCO SVR3.2 with no X or compiler ( or includes ) for around
$700. That had a wired 1-user ATT license.
Novell had a desktop license for Unixware, which I think was under $1000.

In 1992 I had a 386 box running Coherent and Cnews that brought in my
mail and news. Automated UUCP that I'd already had up and running for
around 4 years at that point. My first NetBSD box came up in April 1994.

Except Sun was shipping X11R4.
