Changes to the Packages Collection in April 1999
================================================

April was a busy month - during the second half of the month,
the packages collection was successfully stabilised for the upcoming
1.4 release.  Prior to that, however, a number of changes took place: 
in the package collection itself, if EXTRACT_USING_PAX is defined,
pax(1) will be used in preference to GNU tar to extract packages,
shared library types are calculated dynamically at install-time, and
a biology category was added.

Notable additions to the packages collection include:  compat13, db-2,
dlint, edesktop, egcs, festival, gforth, gmp, libpcap, mailwrapper,
openssl (which replaces ssleay), sendmail-8.9, smalleiffel, thttpd,
ucblogo, wine-current, wmextra, wmsound and xsane.

Notable updates include:  apache, ap-ssl, ap-perl, communicator,
fetchmail, gimp, glib/gtk, gnome, ImageMagick, minicom, mpg123, mysql,
nmap, pkg_install, procmail, python (and related packages), rsync
(NOTE THE BUGTRAQ SECURITY ISSUES), siag, slrn, tcl/tk, ucd-snmp,
windowmaker, XF86Setup, zope and zoularis.

As a user of the packages collection, I know it has saved me a lot of
time, and I have discovered a lot of software I would otherwise not
have known existed.  After a year of writing these "Changes"
bulletins, and about eighteen months of the packages collection
itself, I'd like to thank all of the people who contributed to the
success of the packages collection, and, especially, to the team
itself, who put in an awful lot of time to make all our lives a bit
easier.
