Changes to the Packages Collection in January 2000.
===================================================

Normally, before this little bit of text is added, the annotated
changes amount to just over 300 lines.  This month, they amount to
more than 500 lines.  You should thank all of the pkgsrc developers
profusely.  Also congratulations go to Rene Hexel, who has just
received his doctorate.

The package of the Month award goes to pkgsrc/www/ns-remote, nominated
by David Brownlee, which allows you to bring up a URL in a current
netscape window, rather than go to the trouble of starting yet another
instance of netscape.  Quirk of the Month award goes to
pkgsrc/x11/speyes, which provides the familiar xeyes functionality in
your favourite SouthPark characters.  Honourable mentions go to Jim
Wise for all the work he has done on Java-related packages, and
getting the JDK running from a pkgsrc format.

Finally, please note that you may see unusual messages complaining
about there being an "unknown object format" in an existing package. 
This has been added because NetBSD in general, and the i386 port in
particular, is transitioning towards an ELF object format, and you
will run into problems if you attempt to link an ELF object with an
a.out library.  Since 29th September 1999, the type of object format
has been recorded in the build information, which can be shown using
the

	pkg_info -B <pkgname>

If the package was installed from a pkgsrc before 29th September 1999,
then no object information type will be stored in the build
information for the package, and you will see a warning message.  This
can be turned off using the WARN_NO_OBJECT_FMT definition in
/etc/mk.conf.

Finally, if you find yourself using a package built from pkgsrc, and
think it's fairly neat, please send me mail about it.
