|ensured that the "current" termcap database is installed and that the
|pc3 entry contains :km: yet Alt-x etc simply gives me an 'x'.

use xmodmap to tell the server which keys are the alt keys. 

The various keyboard drivers have different mappings, so ~/.xmodmaprc
is keyboard driver specific.  Rich
