Nope -- there is an added data point for this bug, though.  I hadn't 
considered the fact that I typically do "nohup make build >&Output &" 
when this happens, and then logout and {go to sleep, work somewhere else, 
etc}.  In other words, it happens when I detach the terminal from the 
build.
