Since we are talking about named, I have a question.

In the hostnames file used by named, I have usually seen they begin with
a SOA record, that that is usually followed by by one or two IN record
which name the primary nameservers.

Why do these records exist?  If this has been declared to be a primary
and not a secondary sever, the named would no passon on other references
to these servers any way (that would be handled by a forward reference
in the named.boot?
