I've seen this message exactly once (and it was the other day, though
i don't think that really matters), on a machine for which the
ethernet driver was totally flaky.

I've not looked into it, either, but errno 55 is "No buffer space
available," any my guess is that a really lossy line is royally
screwing NFS.

If you've not already done so, i'd suggest that you try using TCP NFS
mounts.
