Chris, thanks for the explanation -- I had forgotten about the
"symlinks don't have owners or modes" bit.  Given that light,
the symlink problem makes more sense.

Ok, folks, here's where I'm coming from.

I still question the part about doing an ls -i in /.
Not "ls -id /usr", but "ls -i /".

"ls -id /usr" should show "2 /usr".  Should not "ls -i /" show
the actual inode numbers as contained in "/" and not go out and stat
the inodes trying to get their st_ino?  That's how it used to work,
anyway.  Is this a change by design?  If so, I'll leave it at that,
but it appeared to me to be a bug.  Sorry for bothering anyone if this
has been a misfile.
