Thanks for the offer.  I'll try to look at it the beginning of next
week.  

Another alternative is to use pax's tar front end.  Although the last
time I suggested this, people were horrified that they would lose the
-z option.  But with a little work, pax could replace both GNU tar and
GNU cpio.
