I think using pax(1) with tar/cpio frontends might be a better idea anyhow.
And adding a z-option to do compression should not be all that hard to do.

But if that is done, please make sure the compression is done BEFORE the
blocking and not after, like GNU tar is doing.  Would be somewhat more
friendly to use with tapes that way...
