As part of my port of the FreeBSD floppy formatting code, I sucked in
code which allows a user to set most of the entries in the fd_types
array for the duration of an open.

If you do a query-pr on the gnats database for text including
'fdformat', you should find a version of the patches.  Perhaps they'll
be useful to you, and perhaps they could be integrated into -current.
