This is not really addressing your bug report.  rather, adding to it.

hash mark printing and the status bar are mutually exclusive (or
should be).

There should probably be a single command to enable the 'right' one
(and probably another command to find out what's enabled) with 'hash'
remaining as a backward-compatibility command that does the right
thing.
