Well I think we should accomodate these many existing broken 
mailers and escape any line beginning with "From ", I'm not
going to as far as changing it to accomodate bugs for newer
mailers (as your later example [a-z]...) but we should support
existing especially since the format seems to have been changing
so much anyway. It's not that hard to remove the check for a previous
empty line (though I don't want to send my fix because I'm sure
there's a cleaner way of doing it :-).

I only know for certain that it's happening when _executing pipes 
therefrom_. With "correct" do you mean sendmail is behaving correctly
or my observation and comment that it's a bug is correct ?
