Nailing down xdm to use a specific ttyvXXX is certainly another of
many work arounds.  Using ttyv1 for X is a clever workaround for some
programs that keep the console/ttyv0 open.

The bottom line bugglet is still: there are things that xdm doesn't
like about the way some programs close (or don't close) their ttys.

Old SUNOS rc files used to be littered with redirections and
sub-shells in an attempt to lose ttys.  Perhaps that wasn't such a bad
idea.
