Hmmm... that argument would have to be the other way around to make sense....

Anyway, like I said, any machine running NIS should probably be kept as
far away from any public network as possible....

I really can't imagine what you're afraid of -- such a feature can only
be a benefit to those who make use of it.  Those who don't make use of
it won't even know it's there since they'll have to override whatever it
might do in any case.
