Those comments are based on are false assumptions. The correct
definition is in sethostname(3) and setdomainname(3). There's nothing
whatsoever inside the kernel that uses either the hostname or the
domainname values for anything -- they are merely secure ways of storing
a pair of strings somewhere other than in the filesystem.
Any host can use them for DNS, NIS, UUCP, SMTP, Kerberos, whatever.
