This may be related to the attempt by telnet to autologin.  This first
happened to me sometime during the 1.5.1 release cycle... I believe it
might have been with the update of Heimdal to 0.3e.

Try putting the following in your .telnetrc:

DEFAULT
	unset autologin

I agree that having the default for autologin changed to 'on' without
warning was not very nice (violates the Principle of Least Surprise)...
