I ran sup on Jan 2 2003.  I then ran make update in xscreensaver.  It recompiled gtk 2.2 and pango, and added fontconfig and Xft2 and glib 2.2 and now xscreensaver-demo wont start.  Nor will any applicaiton compiled against gtk.
They all complaing:

Xlib: extension "RENDER" missing on display ":0.0"
No fonts found; this probably means that fontconfig
library is not correctly configured.  You may need to
edit the fonts.conf configuration file.  More information 
about fontconfig can be found in the fontconfig(3) manual
page and on http://fontconfig.org

Reab both neither is of any help.  I have fonts on this syste.  Some are true types and other x programs work fine.

To me this is a bug as now programs that were previously compiled against gtk do not have fonts and programs that are cokmpiled against gtk now do not run.
